1913 $20 MS65 PCGS. The advanced specialist will want to give this rare and important Gem great consideration, as nearly all known pieces are lower quality. Only one piece has received a higher grade from NGC, and PCGS has never graded a better one.
The mintage helps to explain the rarity of the 1913 twenty, elusive in all grades and significantly rare in MS65. In Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins, Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth explain the rarity: "double eagles of 1913 were struck during the final year of Howard Taft's presidency, as the world teetered on the brink of war. Mintages slowed as the gold stopped flowing across most international borders, and those struck stayed close by in Eastern banks."
The pristine surface exhibit creamy yellow-gold luster with traces of honey-gold color near the borders and subliminal rose accents. Most examples have dull green-gold color, and this Gem possesses substantially more aesthetic appeal. The surfaces are nearly mark-free and pristine, with the few tiny abrasions hidden in the devices.
The strike is unusually bold for this normally weak issue. Most examples have a flat appearance that is similar to the 1907 and 1908 No Motto coins. In his Guide Book to the series, Dave Bowers did a little fishing on the subject of strike: "Usually well struck. Somewhat similar to the 1912, the 1913 requires cherrypicking in order to reel in a sharp one."
