1913 $20 MS65 PCGS. The Philadelphia Mint struck 168,7
1913 $20 MS65 PCGS. The Philadelphia Mint struck 168,780 business strike double eagles in 1913; the issue is one of the major rarities from that facility. Gold specialist David Akers makes reference to the rarity level of this date in his sale of the Dr. Thaine B. Price Collection in 1998: "As a date, the 1913 is much more rare than the 1912; in fact, it is the rarest of the With Motto Philadelphia issues from 1908-1915, especially in Choice Uncirculated or better condition. Gems are prohibitively rare, and for all practical purposes, unobtainable; even in Choice Uncirculated or Very Choice Uncirculated condition, the 1913 is very scarce, if not moderately rare." The certified population more or less substantiates Akers' assertions. Fewer than 700 coins have been graded MS63 by PCGS and NGC combined, and less than 400 have rated near-Gem designation. The break between near-Gem and Gem is significant, as fewer than 15 MS65 coins have been certified by both services, along with one finer!
The 1913 twenty is not considered to be one of the better-produced coins of the Saint-Gaudens double eagle series. Most appear to have the "flat" look of the No Motto issues of 1907 and 1908, and luster is typically below average. Akers sums up the 1913 best when he says: "Even in high grade, the 1913 does not rank with the better looking issues of this type."
The MS65 specimen offered in this lot does not fit the profile of the "typical" 1913. The design elements display a powerful strike, as evidenced by definition on the Capitol building, on Liberty's hand that holds the olive branch and on the toes, as well as on the feathers of the eagle's belly. Vibrant luster emanates from the softly-frosted surfaces that display a pleasing apricot-gold color and are devoid of significant marks. A minute indention on Liberty's left (right-facing) breast and a small unobtrusive scrape on the sun below the W in WE are mentioned as possible pedigree markers. Population: 7 in 65, 0 finer (10/06).
From The Kutasi Collection.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
