1913<$10> PR68 NGC. Beginning with an extremely limited mintage of 71 pieces, the 1913 Ten Dollar is only surpassed in production rarity by the 1914 with a mere 50 pieces struck, and is comparable to the elusive 1912 in actual rarity. Based on certification data (which is skewed by resubmissions) and auction appearances, a reasonable estimate for the number of surviving specimens is probably in the neighborhood of 25-35 coins. It is interesting to note that Akers (1980) was only able to trace 13 appearances (including duplicates) in major gold sales over a 40-year period.
This incomparable specimen boasts near-perfect matte surfaces that exhibit a characteristic fine-grain texture that is totally void of shiny spots or other post-minting imperfections. The only pedigree marker we can locate is a tiny lamination under the U of UNITED. Repeating what we have said in past offerings, these matte proof Indian Eagles greatly resemble a medal with their distinctive finish and overall strength of striking details. Most importantly, this is the single finest example certified by either major service. Population: 1 in 68, 0 finer (5/05).
