1913 $10 PR66 NGC. With a scant mintage of 71 pieces, the 1913 is only surpassed in production rarity by the 1914 with a mere 50 pieces struck. The 1913 is essentially comparable to the 1912 in actual rarity. We estimate that perhaps 23-30 pieces may still be extant. It is interesting to note that Akers (1980) was only able to trace 13 appearances (including duplicates) in major gold sales over a 40-year period.
The matte surfaces of this coin show a fine-grain texture with subtle red patina overlaid across the otherwise olive-gold surfaces. Identifiable by a tiny black spot at the center of the obverse where Liberty's ear would be, we see no post-striking defects on either side of this magnificent piece. If the intention of the matte proof process was to redirect the viewer's attention away from the flash of the brilliant, mirrored finished proofs and focus on the striking details, then we would say the effort was a success. This coin greatly resembles a medal with its finish and overall strength of striking details. One of the finest examples known of this rare issue. Population: 7 in 66, 5 finer (1/05). Lot:8913
