1913<$10> PR66 NGC. In 1913, production of proof Indian eagles totaled a mere 71 coins, second lowest of the series. With just 50 pieces produced the next year, 1914 had the distinction of the lowest proof production. In terms of rarity today, this issue has the third lowest combined PCGS and NGC population of any date with a total of 37 pieces certified in all grades. Only 1912 (35) and 1915 (34) have lower total populations. In 1980, David Akers was only able to trace 13 auction appearances of this date in proof format, and at that time he suggested that only about 20-25 examples remained in existence. While several more have appeared for public sale since that time, we believe that his estimate of 20-25 coins remains quite accurate. Of course, many of these are so similar in appearance that a detailed and itemized roster of surviving examples would be nearly impossible to produce.
Should someone attempt such an impossible project as a complete roster of survivors, we will point to a pinpoint black dot on the reverse, centered below the C of AMERICA. It appears that this is the only pedigree marker on this coin. The surface finish of this date is essentially the same as the 1912, with "millions of sparkling facets" visible under magnification, per Walter Breen. It is these tiny facets that disperse the light and give this piece its distinctive appearance. The color is medium yellow, just a shade deeper than the proof 1912 eagle just offered. There are no visible surface marks on either side, with or without magnification. Census: 8 in 66, 6 finer (2/06).
From The Alexander Collection.

Importa
