1912 Virginia Military Institute Gold Medal. 38.5 mm (with bezel). 35.8 gm. The insignia of VMI is on the obverse with blue enamel behind the motto SIC SEMPER TYRANNIS (Thus always to tyrants). The reverse has a laurel wreath around most of that side. It is hand-engraved: FRENCH MEDAL / AWARDED TO / A.F. KIBLER / HIGHEST DISTINCTION IN / PURE MATHEMATICS / CLASS 1912.
Major General Abram Franklin Kibler was born in 1891 and died in 1955. He was on Omar Bradley's staff during Operation Overlord (D-Day). His papers are archived at VMI.
The medal itself has been cleaned, and extensive hairlines are visible in the center of the reverse. A couple of short pinscratches are seen between the peripheral legends on the obverse, an apparent attempt by someone to determine if the medal was actually gold.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
