1912-S<5C> MS65 NGC. Sharply struck for this date and mint, with crisp definition on Liberty's hair and on the wreath. Toned with shades of light blue and nickel gray over luster. One of the key dates to this popular series, and a very scarce coin in full Gem grades.
Perhaps these were struck as a trial run for the soon to be issued Buffalo nickel in 1913. The San Francisco Mint had not issued any nickel coins prior to 1912, and a rather paltry 238,000 were coined for all of 1912. Even though the metal content of these coins is twenty-five percent nickel and seventy-five percent copper, that amount of nickel makes the planchets very hard and causes dies to crack and shatter much quicker than seen on copper or silver coins from this period. As we now know, the San Francisco Mint issued fairly large quantities of nickels starting in 1913, and this is also true of the Denver Mint, which hadn't seen nickel production prior to 1912 when that Midwest Mint also coined Liberty nickels. An impressive collector coin and worthy of any top-notch collection. Population: 73 in 65, 5 finer (8/05).
