1912-S<$5> MS62 PCGS. Gold specialist David Akers (1988) writes: "The 1912-S is one of the most poorly made, if not the absolute most poorly made, gold issues of the 20th century. The Mint had serious die problems for this issue and nearly all specimens have a nearly invisible, amorphous mintmark and below average luster." The present coin possesses these characteristics. The mintmark appears as a blob, and the luster is somewhat subdued. The color is apricot-gold, and the design elements are adequately brought up. Small contact marks are evident on the Indian's cheek and in the left (facing) obverse and reverse fields. Population: 51 in 62, 36 finer (2/06).
