1912<$5> PR67 NGC. Struck in the bright yellow matte finish that produces perfectly even color and surface texture. Putting this Superb Gem through its paces with a magnifier will confirm the impressionistic charm of myriad facets which flash like twinkling stars when examined under a light. Each interlocking facet is placed at a different angle, which causes the twinkling effect when the coin is examined. Furthermore and of extreme importance is the quality of the surfaces. Of the 144 proofs struck in 1912, perhaps 10% to 20% retain the superb quality seen here. Most show evidence of contact marks or hairlines from careless handling or cleaning. Not so here, as the surfaces are nearly perfectly preserved, and this coin is likely unchanged since the day it was coined. These early proof gold coins are nearly impossible to trace through the sweep of time; early auction photographs lack the quality needed for pedigree tracing, and each of these proof coins appears identical even when viewed together. What we do know, is that the present coin was carefully preserved since the time of issue, it has survived unscathed by luck of the draw and an unbroken chain of owners that understood the care of the delicate surfaces. The present coin is nudged out from the finest graded by a single coin and has earned its current elite status as one of 23 coins reported this well preserved between the two major grading services.
The year 1912 is rich in history for America. The British ship Titanic headed out from England on its maiden voyage on April 10, steaming hard for New York. Close to midnight on April 14, that ill-fated ship struck the iceberg that sank the "unsinkable" in less than four hours, the ship taking over 1,500 lives when it slipped beneath the icy waters of the North Atlantic. It is remarkable that a coin from that very same year could exist in such superlative condition.

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid. This lot is being auctioned in conjunction with a live floor auction by Heritage Galleries & Auctioneers. All final auction and invoice information will be supplied by Heritage Galleries & Auctioneers, and all other information should be considered preliminary.
