1912 $20 MS65 NGC. Fewer double eagles
1912<$20> MS65 NGC. 1912 saw the second lowest mintage (behind 1886) of double eagles for any year since the denomination was introduced with the 1849 patterns. For only the second time since its 1854 opening, the San Francisco Mint produced no double eagles in 1912. The Denver Mint also bypassed the denomination, the first such omission since its opening in 1906. Philadelphia struck less than 150,000 double eagles in 1912, its lowest mintage since 1906. Despite its limited emission, the 1912 is available in bagmarked Mint State grades. However, Gems are seldom encountered, and the supply is insufficient to meet the demand from ambitious collectors of this highly popular series. This fully lustrous piece has a bold strike and an overall clean appearance. A moderate luster graze near 9 o'clock determines the grade.
