1912 $2 1/2 MS65 PCGS. This scarcity in the Indian qua
1912<$2 1/2> MS65 PCGS. This scarcity in the Indian quarter eagle series is much more frequently encountered in MS64 condition than MS65. In fact, our archives show only about a dozen Gem examples of this issue in our auctions over the last dozen or so years, compared with several dozen MS64 examples. Not surprisingly, the population data reflect this gap, with nearly 800 examples graded MS64 at NGC and PCGS combined, yet less than 90 Gem specimens at both services (6/06). The present piece offers rich peach-gold surfaces with tinges of hazel on the highpoints. The surfaces show much less evidence of contact than usually seen on coins of this type, notably a clean cheek on the Indian, as well as in the open fields before and above the devices on each side. The Indian's hair shows good, if not full, strike details, as do the headdress feathers, and the fasces are well brought up and fully separated. A small tick on the jawline is noted only under a loupe. Population: 48 in 65, 5 finer (6/06).
