1912<$2 1/2> MS65 PCGS. The 1912, with a business strike mintage of 616,000 pieces, is one of the scarcest Philadelphia Indian Head quarter eagles, and is among the rarest dates in the higher Uncirculated grades. A precipitous drop in the certified population is noted between the near and full Gem categories, from just less than 700 specimens in MS64 to about 80 coins in MS65. This is reflected in nearly a four-fold increase in price for a full Gem coin.
The MS65 coin offered in this lot is sharply struck, even in the centers, which are sometimes weak on this issue. The hair at the Indian's temple is nicely (though not quite fully) delineated, as are the eagle's feathers. The luster is somewhat more vibrant than usually seen, making this a highly desirable piece. Light abrasions are noted on the Indian's cheek, and minor handling marks occur in the raised, exposed fields, especially in those of the upper reverse. None of these are as bad as typically found on this normally abraded issue. Orange-gold patination imbued with subtle lime-green accents bathes both sides. Population: 45 in 65, 5 finer (1/06).
