1912 $2 1/2 --Altered Surfaces--NCS. Proof. The mint made various modifications on the Indian quarter eagle proofs from 1908 to 1915. Walter Breen (1977) wrote that the 1912 proof had a "Fine sandblast finish. Different from all previous matte coins; under a microscope the surfaces show millions of minute shiny facets." Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth (2006) add that the 1912 texture " ... reflects the light with reflective microscopic facets." The uniform khaki-gold surfaces on the piece in this lot are subdued, and do not display the "sparkle" ordinarily seen on the issue. We are unable to determine the cause or causes of the surfaces alteration. In any event, the 1912 is one of the scarcest of the Indian proof issues, with approximately 55 to 65 known.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
