1912 $10 MS66 PCGS. The 1912 is the first year of the final iteration of Saint-Gaudens' design for the ten dollar gold piece, a design that began in 1907 with Rolled and Wire Rim versions. Due to technical problems, including difficulty stacking, Charles Barber was called upon to modify the designs. In 1908, IN GOD WE TRUST was added to the reverse. Finally, in 1912, the number of stars on the edge was increased from 46 to 48 to account for the recent admission to the Union of New Mexico and Arizona.
Regarding specimens from 1908 through 1916, Q. David Bowers noted, "Not many such pieces were saved at the time they were issued, and, accordingly, gems are elusive." He further stated, "At the Mint State level, the quality varies widely, and the typical piece is apt to have problems of one sort or another." The 1912 has a large mintage of 400,000 pieces and quite a few were preserved in the lower Mint State grades. However, Gem and finer examples are seldom encountered. This piece has terrific mint frost that has an overlay of light orange-gold color. Sharply struck. The fine, matte-like surfaces show no obvious abrasions to the unaided eye. PCGS has graded nine coins in MS66 and only one higher (an MS67).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
