1911-S<$20> MS66 PCGS. This is an exquisitely preserved 1911-S double eagle, well defined, with outstanding luster and fine-grained, mattelike surfaces. Flashy yellow-golden hues give a fresh appearance to this coin, and bold luster radiates unimpeded from each side. The strike is bold, even on the sometimes problematic lower obverse, and shows a bit of softness only on the last digit of the date. Like the 1910-S, the 1911-S (775,750 pieces produced) is a common issue in lower Mint State grades that becomes scarce when one reaches the Gem grade level. At the Premium Gem level it is rare, with only 44 pieces so graded through the combined efforts of NGC and PCGS (9/06).
