1911-S<$10> MS65 NGC. The 1911-S has a mintage of just 51,000 pieces. The majority of survivors show light wear, either from non-numismatic handing or moderate circulation. The hard money tradition of the West changed gradually, although gold coins generally disappeared from active commerce by 1917, when the U.S. entered the first World War. The present remarkable piece shows nary a trace of highpoint friction, and the cartwheel luster is both potent and comprehensive. Rich pumpkin-gold and olive blushes alternate across the fields, which are only faintly marked. The reverse rim is bevelled, and an interesting threadlike lintmark on Liberty's mark distinguishes this piece from its few peers. The mintmark appears to be repunched, and shows an extra pair of serifs. Census: 13 in 65, 2 finer (9/06).
