1911-D $5 MS64 PCGS.
1911-D $5 MS64 PCGS.<p>Struck in low relief like the 1908-D, the mintmark on the 1911-D is usually well defined, and the present example is no exception. The balance of the features are equally sharp with well separated feathers in the Indian's headdress and on the eagle's shoulder. The luster is also typical of the issue with a somewhat subdued, slightly granular texture, but suggestions of mint frost are also seen. The number of abrasions is minimal, and none are sizeable or individually distracting. In sum, this is an impressive coin for the issue with remarkably well preserved features. Produced to the extent of just 72,500 pieces, the 1911-D is the rarest 20th century gold coin in grades above the MS63 level of preservation. This date just surpasses the 1914-S Half Eagle for this prestigious honor. We last offered a similarly graded '11-D Five as lot 8039 in our 1999 Chicago ANA Signature Sale. That coin, part of the impressive Peter Bronson Collection, realized $40,000. Population: 10 in 64, there are none finer (11/01). Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. Sometimes eBay Premier live bid software cannot keep up with that pace, so we strongly recommend that you place a realistic proxy bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Premier carry a 20% Buyer's Premium.
