1911-D $5 MS63 PCGS. Just 72,500 half eagles of this issue were struck, the second lowest mintage in the entire series. Its rarity is perhaps equal to its mintage rank, with few finer examples certified by either PCGS or NGC. In fact, PCGS has only graded 10 finer examples of this date. In the past dozen years, we have sold just 11 MS63 or finer examples of this issue, or less than one a year. This issue is one of the rarest of all 20th century gold coinage issues. Walter Breen called this date extremely rare in Uncirculated grades. Rich honey-gold color is enhanced by frosty luster. While the surfaces are not mark-free, they are totally acceptable for the grade. This example is sharply struck and it has a full, crisp mintmark. Population: 40 in 63, 13 finer (1/05). Lot:8694
