1911-D<$20> MS67 NGC. After the 1908 No Motto, the 1911-D (846,500 pieces produced) is the most common pre-1920 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle from an absolute standpoint. Also in terms of total number of coins known, the '11-D is one of the most readily obtainable dates in the entire 1907-1933 series. David Akers further notes that "a small number of superb, nearly perfect examples of this issue are known to exist." As one might suspect, however, such coins are rare and infrequently offered at auction. This is one of the finest representatives of this issue that we have offered. Both sides display a smooth sheen from rim to rim that would be remarkable for a Double Eagle of any type or date. The surfaces are bursting with mint luster that possesses the characteristic light granularity of the issue. There is not a single ill-defined feature on either side, and the eye appeal is truly amazing. NGC and PCGS combined report 29 coins at the MS67 level, and none are finer (6/05).
