1911-D $2 1/2 Weak D AU53 PCGS
1911-D $2 1/2 Weak D AU53 PCGS. The PCGS insert indicating a "Weak D" mintmark is an understatement! It is not discernible even with a loupe. Fortunately, the ANA Authentication Bureau, in the November 1996 issue of The Numismatist, illustrates other diagnostics of this key date. According to the Bureau: "The reverse of genuine specimens is characterized by two areas of die polish. The first--a single scratch--is situated in the deepest recess of the outer edge of the eagle's beak. The second area ... can be found in the recess just to the left of the arrowheads. There you will find several vertical die scratches." Both of these diagnostics are visible under high magnification on this AU53 example, the first (outer edge of the beak), being most apparent. Peach-gold color adorns both sides, and aside from light highpoint wear, the design elements are sharply defined. A few minor marks are not worthy of individual mention.

Coin Engraver: Bela Lyon Pratt

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
