1911-D<$2 1/2> MS64 PCGS. This specimen is another example of a key-date near-Gem coin that would fit well into a Gem set, yet at a fraction of the price--and in this case, in a grade that is nearly unimprovable, as in the 20 years since its founding, PCGS has graded only 17 pieces finer (1/06). This piece is exceedingly well struck, revealing no areas of weakness, and with a bold D mintmark for the issue, which often has a weak or even undetectable mintmark. The satiny luster is full and unbroken, save for a tiny graze under the A of STATES. The color is a beautiful copper-gold, with no dark spots or other distractions. Finally, the abrasions that are visible even under a loupe are of the most faint and trivial kind, one wisp of a light scratch on the Indian's cheek (that may have limited a Gem designation), a second, more trivial scratch that runs from the war bonnet's upper bound to beneath the Y in LIBERTY. These are absolutely the only distractions on this phenomenally appealing and virtually unbeatable key date. This should represent a considerable opportunity for some astute collector.
