1911-D<$2 1/2> MS64 PCGS. This important key date example boasts an excellent strike, including a completely defined mintmark. Displaying fine satiny luster and intermingled lime-green and orange-rose color, the only slight distractions are a wispy pinscratch connecting the date's last number 1 to the Indian's bust, and a small contact mark on the cheekbone. The diagnostic wire rim on the upper right obverse is very faint, but can be discerned using magnification.
The original mintage of 55,680 pieces is the lowest among all 20th century quarter eagles, and represents the Denver Mint's first delivery of that denomination. It is also the only Indian quarter eagle issue with a mintage of less than 100,000 pieces. This outstanding near-Gem representative, then, must be considered in the context of overall scarcity, which can be anticipated to a certain degree based upon mintage, but also requires an examination of survival in the better grades of Mint State. For the 1911-D, this survival rate is respectable but not spectacular by any means, as the issue was clearly not saved from circulation in great numbers. Thus, although several hundred pieces have attained the MS64 grade assessment, and are therefore somewhat attainable to the collecting public, far fewer examples are known at the Gem level of preservation or finer, making Gems and Premium Gems simply unaffordable, for most. Considering the paucity of higher-graded specimens, it seems likely that a fine near-Gem like this one should draw serious attention from any number of potential buyers.
