1911-D $2 1/2 MS64 PCGS. The mintmark is pleasingly bold on this always-popular key-date issue. Not only the 1911-D quarter eagles, but also their half eagle and eagle counterparts, are rare and in demand. All three issues were struck in small quantities for reasons not readily apparent today, although perhaps the large mintage of 1911-D double eagles--nearly twice the previous D-mint emission--gives us some clue. Perhaps the smaller coins were simply viewed as unneeded. As with all known specimens, the present piece shows a pronounced knife or wire rim on the upper right obverse. The exposed, open fields are refreshingly free of mentionable distractions, and even the Indian's cheek shows only a couple of minuscule ticks. Radiant luster over khaki-gold, sharply struck surfaces completes the lovely complement of admirable attributes that this strictly graded near-Gem offers. PCGS has certified 19 pieces finer (2/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
