1911-D $2 1/2 MS64 PCGS. The 1911-D is the key date of the Indian quarter eagle series, with a minuscule mintage of 55,680 pieces. The next scarcest date, in terms of the number struck, is the 1914, having a mintage of almost five times that of the 1911-D. Nonetheless, this key date is obtainable if one is willing to accept a lower Mint State example for his or her collection. The acquisition of a Gem example is an altogether different story. The PCGS Population Report confirms that few examples of this date were saved shortly after being issued, as only 17 examples have been graded MS65, with just three finer (4/07). As such, even advanced collectors are content with the inclusion of a near-Gem example of the 1911-D in their Indian quarter eagle sets. A review of the PCGS Set Registry confirms this statement, as just four of the current finest 48 sets include Gem or better examples. This piece shows a truly bold mintmark, a plus for most potential bidders. The glorious orange-gold surfaces are fine-grained and typically mattelike. Glints of hazel-gray appear on the highpoints of each side, and careful perusal with a glass reveals only a single small tick on the Indian's cheek that likely removes this nonetheless high-end piece from Gem consideration.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
