1911-D<$2 1/2> MS64 PCGS. The '11-D is the key-date to the Indian quarter eagle series, and is elusive in all grades. Most Uncirculated examples are in the MS60 to MS62 range. MS63 specimens are available with a little searching and patience, but near-Gems are difficult to locate, and MS65 and better coins are rare.
This issue has long been the target of counterfeiters. Gold specialist David Akers indicates that all genuine examples display a partial wire rim on the obverse from about 12 o'clock to 3 o'clock. This diagnostic is clear on the present MS64 specimen. Also, in a July 6, 1992 Coin World article, Mary Sauvain cites some other characteristics of genuine examples, including a single, short die scratch running up and down the inside of the arrow's incuse outline, and a single diagonal die scratch across the inside of the beak's outline. These are also visible on the present coin. The design elements are sharply struck, and the mintmark is bold. This is nearly invisible on the majority of examples, so its sharpness is an extremely important consideration. The surfaces have the typical slightly granular appearance of all genuine 1911-D quarter eagles, with frosty orange-gold luster and excellent eye appeal. A few wispy, unobtrusive handling marks in the open, exposed raised fields are mentioned for accuracy.
