1911-D<$2 1/2> MS64 PCGS. In nearly every series, there is a coin that experiences greater demand than any other, and the 1911-D is just that coin in the Indian quarter eagle series. The mintage of this issue, the first of just three Indian quarter eagle issues coined in Denver, totaled just 55,680 pieces. Walter Breen commented: "All 15 date-mintmark combinations of this design were coined in large enough quantities to insure their permanent availability at a price, the only difficult one being 1911-D. This last has accordingly been touted as a 'key coin'--one the collector must reach for if (s)he wishes to complete a set."
Two basic varieties exist, with either a Weak mintmark or a Bold mintmark. This particular example is the more desirable Bold mintmark variety, although the edge of the slab partly obscures the small D from view. Also obscured from view by the holder is the wire rim from 1 o'clock to 4 o'clock, an important authentication characteristic. Of course, one of the greatest benefits of third-party certification is the elimination of counterfeit coins from the market place. Although there can always be discussions of the grade assigned to any coin, all of the major certification services, including PCGS, NGC, ANACS, and ICG, do a fantastic job determining authentication. Today, the problem of counterfeit coins in numismatic circulation is nearly extinct.
This Choice Mint State example, exceeded by only 18 better quality coins certified by PCGS (6/06), is sharply struck and aesthetically desirable. Both sides have brilliant yellow-gold surfaces with frosty luster and traces of orange toning. Only the slightest microscopic surface marks on the reverse have kept this from Gem quality. A remarkable, highly desirable near-Gem specimen. In fact, we believe that this example would compare favorably to many Gem examples of this particular date.
