1911-D<$2 1/2> MS64 NGC. This impressive near-Gem example has fully brilliant satin luster with lovely yellow-gold color. In his A Handbook of 20th-Century United States Gold Coins, renowned gold coinage authority David Akers commented: "The 1911-D is the rarest date of the series in all grades from circulated to Gem Uncirculated. Most known examples are in the lower Mint State grades, and obtaining one in MS-60 to 62 condition can usually be accomplished with only a little searching. However, in MS-63 condition this issue is seldom available, and anything better than MS-63 is extremely difficult to locate." Like many of our sales, the present auction provides the collector with a rare opportunity to choose just the right example from multiple specimens in a range of grades. Be certain to choose a piece with a bold mintmark, such as this example, for others with a weak mintmark are clearly less desirable.
