1911-D<$2 1/2> MS64 NGC. Orange-gold toning fills the obverse and dominates the reverse, although a window of ice-blue patina is present on the eagle's front leg. The fields are refreshingly void of marks, and the strike is precise, even on the lower feathers of the headdress. The low mintage 1911-D is the uncontested key to the series, and is subject to intense demand since, unlike other gold series, an Indian quarter eagle set can be affordably completed by date and mint. On many 1911-D quarter eagles, the mintmark is faint, and is identifiable only by the half-moon crescent of its opening. The present near-Gem, however, has a bold mintmark, and is easily distinguished with the unaided eye. This satiny example would be the standout piece of any specialized collection.
