1911-D<$2 1/2> MS64 NGC. An important example of this, the rarest quarter eagle struck in the 20th century, to the extent of only 55,600 pieces. Although many of the issue were struck with a weak mintmark--so much so that sometimes other die diagnostics must be used to verify authenticity--the present example has a bold and prominent mintmark. The satiny surfaces are a delectable honey-gold, with tinges of hazel. The surface preservation is head and shoulders above most coins of this type, of any date. The series' incuse design ensured that the fields, in higher relief on the coins than are the devices, would be subjected to much more than their normal share of abrasions, scratches, ticks, and various other surface insults. Not so the present piece, which is nearly free of abrasions in the prime focal points before the Indian's face, on his cheek, and above the eagle on the reverse. The strike is bold, without notable weakness. Acquisition of this key-date coin would enable many collectors to complete one of the few U.S. gold series that could even be considered for completion.
