1911-D<$2 1/2> MS63 PCGS. Only 55,600 pieces were struck of the 1911-D, which makes it the undisputed key to the Indian quarter eagle series. As a general rule, collectors seldom assemble sets above MS63, even though higher graded pieces are occasionally available. A well-matched MS63 set is where most collectors top out, which again makes the 1911-D a key issue in terms of the present grade. This is a high-end example that shows very few abrasions for an MS63, especially an MS63 of this design type. The strike is strong throughout with detail to the top of the eagle's wing, and almost complete definition on the lowest feather of the headdress. Likewise, the mint luster is strong throughout with an even, satiny finish, and close examination reveals a subtle intermixture of lilac blended in with the overall reddish-golden color.
