1911-D $2 1/2 MS63 NGC. The Indian quarter eagle serie
1911-D<$2 1/2> MS63 NGC. The Indian quarter eagle series roughly parallels periods of prosperity in the early decades of the 20th century. A ten-year hiatus is in the middle of the series that covers the years before and during the Great War and the depression that followed the end of the war. The series also ends in the same year as the stock market crash in 1929 that started the Great Depression. The 1911-D is the stopper for any collector who wishes to assemble a set of this otherwise relatively common series. In a backhanded compliment to the value of these coins, the 1911-D has been extensively counterfeited since at least 1960. The diagnostic wire rim is present on the right side of the obverse of this piece, ensuring its authenticity (in addition, of course, to its being encapsulated by NGC). The surfaces are bright with pronounced reddish coloration. The striking details are strong throughout, including the mintmark. The fields, which are the highpoint of this sunken relief design, show numerous small abrasions that are consistent with the grade.
