<B>1911-D $2 1/2 MS63 NGC.</B></I> Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth, writing in their <I>Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins, 1795-1933,</B></I> say of the key-date 1911-D Indian Head quarter eagle: "...few examples were saved at the time of issue. Most of the survivors are in lower Mint State grades...." The population figures bear this out, as several hundred specimens fall into the MS61 to MS64 grade range.<BR> The MS63 example that we present in this lot displays pretty peach-gold color that resides on well preserved surfaces that yield soft luster. Excellent definition is apparent on the feathers of the headdress and on most of the eagle's plumage, though we note some softness on the eagle's shoulder.
