1911-D $2 1/2 MS62 NGC. The mintmark is remarkably bold on this delightful key-date quarter eagle, one of only 55,600 business strikes produced for the issue. What were the reasons behind such a minuscule mintage? While no complete explanation is forthcoming, it is likely that the exceeding large coinage of 1910-D eagles--at more than 2.3 million pieces by far the largest mintage until the 1932--helped ensure a plentiful supply of D-mint gold coins for a time, complemented in the following year by a large double eagle mintage of nearly 850,000 pieces. For smaller gold denominations, the Denver Mint had also coined an inordinately large emission of 3.4 million half eagles in 1909, so perhaps there was simply no need for a large 1911-D quarter eagle coinage.
The present example offers the typical matte-like khaki-gold surfaces that are characteristic of this issue, and while there are a couple of undistracting highpoint abrasions that are consistent with the assigned grade, the overall eye appeal is quite high. The Indian Head quarter eagle series is one of the few U.S. gold series that collectors of average means can complete, and as such this key date should make a desirable catch for some lucky and forthright bidder.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
