1911-D<$2 1/2> MS61 NGC. In an article in the July 6, 1992 issue of Coin World, Mary Sauvain listed several key diagnostics for determining the authenticity of 1911-D quarter eagles. Among the lesser-known of these are: a single die scratch that runs at a slight diagonal across the inside of the outline of the beak of the eagle, and a "scalloped" inner rim on the reverse between 11 and 1 o'clock. This piece certainly shows these characteristics as well as others that are better known. The mintmark is light but fully formed, and the overall strike is well defined but not fully detailed. A number of light abrasions are scattered over each side, which explain the MS61 grade. The bright yellow-gold surfaces have a light overlay of reddish patina.
