1911 Barney Oldfield & Jim Jeffries Signed Large Photograph. The first man to drive a car a mile a minute poses with the boxer best remembered as Jack Johnson's victim when becoming the first black Heavyweight Champ in 1910. This photo was signed just seven months after that historic Reno match, as a "Feb. 14 - 1911" notation at upper left notes. Oldfield has penned above his image, "To my friend Lardner, You know me, Barney Oldfield." Jeffries adds, "To my southern friend, Yours, Jas. J. Jeffries." The "Lardner" in question is the famed sportswriter Ring Lardner, who maintained friendships with such literary elite as F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway. This photo that once resided in his collection measures 10x12" in size, with the mounting board extending the final dimensions to 12x15". Minimal wear is evident at the corners, and would be hidden when the piece is framed. The ink of the inscriptions and signatures remains wonderfully bold, registering at a strength of 8/10 or better. A fine piece that joins three of the biggest names in pre-World War I American sports. LOA from PSA/DNA.
