<B>1911 Alaska Souvenir Gold, HK-850, MS63 NGC.</B></I> Gold, size 8 (12.7 mm). According to Hibler-Kappen (1963), this issue is "believed to have been dated 1911 to commemorate the golden anniversary of the earliest discovery of gold in Alaska (1861) by Eskimos." This design is one of 14 types in the Alaska souvenir gold series and is one of only three versions to have been struck on round planchets. The 1911-dated pieces are also referred to as "parka heads," referring to the obverse design of an Eskimo wearing a parka hood. Well defined details and lustrous surfaces qualify this as a solid MS63 example.
