1911 Addie Joss Benefit Game Photograph from the Walter Johnson Collection, Type 1. From the same groundbreaking event that spawned the panoramic photograph with which Heritage Auction Galleries set a world record price of $89,625 in October 2005 comes this never-before-seen image from the personal collection of Hall of Fame participant Walter Johnson. The Big Train, just a twenty-three year old kid here, sits on the dugout steps with Frank "Home Run" Baker, "Smoky Joe" Wood and fellow Senator Gabby Street in this wonderfully clear 4.5x6.5" snapshot. All but Johnson are identified over their images in vintage ink in Johnson's hand, as a letter from authenticator James Spence will attest. The scrapbook page upon which the photo was once mounted has been trimmed to the edges. A network of creases traverse the image, and a small insignificant thumbnail of paper loss appears at the upper edge, but these factors can do nothing to sully the tremendous visual and historical power. An amazing insider's look at one of the most noteworthy events of the Dead Ball era.
