<B>1911 50C PR66 NGC.</B></I> David Lawrence (1991), in discussing the 1911 proof half dollar, comments that "though the 543 proofs made is the third lowest for the series, a fairly high percentage have been certified making them readily available." Lawrence's contention holds through the near-Gem level, but PR65 coins are scarce, and finer specimens are rare. The current Premium Gem displays some field-motif contrast when the coin is tilted under a light source. Light gold and lavender toning gravitates to the margins, and a solid strike brings out sharp definition on the mildly frosted design features.
