1911 $5 PR66 NGC. This is a finely grained Gem matte proof example with the usual mustard-yellow color of the date, accented by hints of pale orange toning on each side. The surfaces are mostly free of blemishes, rendering pedigree tracking nearly impossible, although a tiny copper spot is positioned northwest of the G in GOD on the reverse. The mintage of this issue is recorded as 139 pieces in matte proof, and the number that survive is not specifically known today, although a realistic quantity might be 70 to 80 pieces. Any attempt to track pedigrees of matte proof gold through the usual process of plate matching in past auction catalogs is a futile effort, even if the quality of photographic reproduction is excellent. Seldom do examples show any individual characteristics that can be matched from one appearance to the next. Census: 16 in 66, 12 finer (3/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
