1911 $5 PR66 NGC. The Philadelphia Mint returned to striking proof Indian Half Eagles with a matte finish in 1911. The dark, tan-gold color and finely granular texture are not dissimilar to those features seen on proof 1908 Indian Fives. As desirable as this finish is today, it was a detriment to these coins when they were first produced. Their unpopularity with collectors of the time undoubtedly led to the destruction of many specimens as unsold. Still others were mishandled over the years by collectors who did not appreciate their true rarity. As a result, survivors of the 139-piece proof delivery of 1911 Indian Half Eagles are rare in all grades with a rapidly dwindling certified population above the PR65 grade level. This is one of the most technically pristine and aesthetically pleasing representatives of this rare proof issue that we have ever handled. There is not a single outwardly distracting blemish, and the tan-gold surfaces are as close to fully struck as one should expect for the type. A tiny area of shininess at the top of the eagle's wing and a few wispy contact marks through the letters UNI in UNITED are the only worthwhile pedigree markers. We have handled two other PR66 NGC 1911 Indian Half Eagles over the last ten years: 1. Ex: FUN Signature Sale--The Joseph J. Abbell Collection of U.S. Gold Coins (Heritage, 1/2000), lot 7528. 2. Ex: Long Beach Signature Sale (Heritage, 9/1998), lot 6974. Pedigreed to Ed Trompeter. The present example is Ex: Long Beach Signature Sale (Heritage, 9/1998), lot 6995, which was a four-piece set of matte proof 1911 gold coins.
