1911 $20 PR66 NGC. Matte proof gold is the caviar of 20th century numismatics. All of these coins are extremely rare, and nearly impossible to acquire in Gem or finer quality. The finely grained surfaces of the 1911 matte proofs are entirely unlike the satiny finish of the 1909 and 1910 proofs. These proof coins were given multiple impressions on a hydraulic press from new dies that were carefully prepared. Neither dies or planchets were treated, but the planchets were selected for smooth surfaces. After they were struck, each of the 100 coins was sandblasted to achieve the desired matte finish. In Renaissance of American Coinage 1905-1908, Roger W. Burdette writes that the "results of sandblasting and other techniques often varied from coin to coin and year to year, depending on which assistant did the work and whether procedures were followed carefully."
A Premium Gem proof, this double eagle has splendid light mustard color on both sides, with a tiny copper spot just above the center of the obverse, and a few slightly light yellow areas on some design highpoints, probably as made. The overall appearance is exceptional, with no marks evident on either side. All of the design details are bold and complete on both sides. Although NGC has certified a few finer examples, this is an exceptional representative that will please the connoisseur. Census: 15 in 66, 15 finer (1/08).

Coin Engraver: Augustus Saint-Gaudens

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
