1911 $20 MS67 NGC. The 1911 twenty dollar, with a mint
1911 $20 MS67 NGC. The 1911 twenty dollar, with a mintage of 197,250 business strikes, is relatively available through the mid-range of Uncirculated grades. MS65 and finer examples, however, are a different story. David Akers, in his May 19, 1998 catalog of the Dr. Thaine Price Collection, writes:

"Like all of the Philadelphia Mint With Motto Saint-Gaudens double eagles from 1908-1915, the 1911 is a rather underrated issue, especially in Gem condition. In recent years, however, a substantial number of decent quality mint state specimens have appeared on the market from one large hoard, but most of them are only Choice Uncirculated or lower grade specimens, although there were also some Very Choice Uncirculated examples in the group. However, Gem quality pieces were conspicuously absent from the quantities that came out recently, and so the 1911 Double Eagle remains a rarity in Gem Uncirculated condition to this day."

The NGC/PCGS census/population figures bear out Akers' assertion. The two services have seen nearly 1,000 MS63 examples and about 600 near-Gems. Only 80 or so MS65 pieces have been certified, however, along with about 20 Premium Gems, and a mere two MS67 coins (both NGC-graded); no finer examples have been seen.
This MS67 specimen is nearly unabraded, though we mention a faint linear mark on the lower left part of the sun for pedigree purposes. Peach-gold surfaces display pleasing luster and a subtle olive-green tint. The strike is virtually unimprovable, and manifests itself in sharp delineation on Liberty's face, hands, and foot, as well as the panes in the Capitol building and the eagle's plumage. In sum, this coin possesses fabulous technical quality and aesthetic appeal. This is a great opportunity for the Saint-Gaudens specialist, as such a remarkable piece may not appear again for some time.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
