1911 $20 MS67 NGC. Most of the Philadelphia Mint double eagle issues from 1908 to 1915 are fairly scarce, and the 1911 is a bit more so due to its lower original mintage of 197,350 pieces. By comparison, the 1910 issue was produced to the extent of 482,167 examples, and the 1912 saw an emission of 149,284 coins. While examples of the 1911 are obtainable up to about MS64, pieces in Gem and higher grades are quite rare and elusive. In the Superb Gem MS67 grade, this is one of only two pieces so graded at NGC, with none at PCGS. To give a better idea of the rarity of this date, the Smithsonian Institution's finest example is an AU58!
Fortunately for collectors, most examples of the issue are well struck, although luster varies greatly from coin to coin. This example is near the top echelons not only in terms of technical merit, but also in terms of aesthetics and overall eye appeal. The radiant greenish-gold surfaces appear to be almost completely unencumbered by even the most minuscule impairments. Particularly on Liberty's head, thighs, and torso--areas often prone to unsightly abrasions--this piece is remarkably free of distracting ticks and contact evidence. The surfaces fairly glow with cartwheel luster that is more reminiscent of a Morgan dollar than a Saint-Gaudens double eagle. Blessed by a sharp strike that brings up the minute details of the eagle's breast and wing feathers, as well as the fine detail on Liberty's face, torch, gown, and the Capitol building, this piece stands head and shoulders above the examples typically encountered of this difficult issue. Simply unimprovable! Census: 2 in 67, 0 finer.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
