1911<$20> MS65 PCGS. The 1911, with a mintage of 197,250 business strikes, is a relatively common date, and is readily available in the higher circulated grades. Even the lower Mint State grades (MS60 through MS63) do not prove difficult. Near-Gems are more challenging, and Gem and finer coins are scarce to rare. Fewer than 100 examples have been certified in MS65 and finer by PCGS and NGC.
Finely granular matte-like surfaces display pleasing apricot and yellow-gold patina with nice luster. The design elements are sharply struck, as is characteristic of most '11 double eagles. Liberty's face portrays excellent definition, as do the fingers on both hands and toes on the left (right facing) foot. Most of the panes on the Capitol building are visible, as are leaves on the olive branch and the eagle's feathers. A small mark on Liberty's left (right facing) breast and a few on the legs prevent an even higher grade. A few trivial marks on the reverse rim are difficult to see, and do not distract in the least. Population: 38 in 65, 10 finer (4/06).
