1911<$20> MS65 PCGS. In his recent A Guide Book of Double Eagle Gold Coins, Q. David Bowers had this to say regarding the 1911 Philadelphia Mint issue of double eagles: "Usually well struck. The quality of the lustre varies, and some are, shall I say, lackluster. Cherrypicking is advised."
The coin that we are offering in this lot is one that exhibits pleasing, softly frosted luster, which glows evenly across both sides. It is well struck and displays lovely yellow-gold color and distinctly matte-like surface textures. Surface marks are minimal and nearly microscopic, except for one minor abrasion on the eagle's head that is barely visible without magnification. A faint mint-made grease streak extends through the right obverse field, running directly below and parallel to Liberty's outstretched arm, but is very faint and does little to detract from the overall beauty of this conditionally scarce survivor. From a limited mintage of 197,350 pieces. Population: 39 in 65, 10 finer (8/06).
