<B>1911 $2 1/2 PR68 NGC.</B></I> In his <I>Encyclopedia of United States and Colonial Proof Coins (1977),</B></I> Walter Breen writes, "Matte finish for the proof 1911 quarter eagle dull and darker than unc., nearest to 1908 but differing minutely in texture of grain." 191 pieces were struck, significantly fewer than the 682 proofs produced in 1910. But NGC census records a total of 101 proof 1910 pieces, only slightly higher than the 97 proof 1911 examples that the third party grader has certified. This suggests that the Mint melted the majority of the 1910 proofs, and may have melted any unsold 1911 proofs as well.<BR> As is always the case for matte proof quarter eagles, the strike is intricate. The granular matte finish prevents absolute definition, however, particularly within the crevices of the headdress feathers. The PR68 grade implies pristine surfaces, and this is the case for the present coin. Examination beneath a loupe locates only a single interruption to the otherwise uniform finish, a mint-caused thin line between the top of the eagle's head and the first S in STATES. This likely represents a lintmark, although its effect is less than on brilliant proofs because of the matte preparation of the proofs.<BR> A perusal of past Heritage Signature auctions indicates this is the first appearance of a PR68 Indian quarter eagle in a Heritage auction. In addition, no 1911 NGC PR67 has been previously offered by Heritage in a Signature auction.
