1911 $2 1/2 PR66 NGC. Proof gold from 1911 broke w
1911 $2 1/2 PR66 NGC. Proof gold from 1911 broke with the two-year experiment of the "Roman Gold" variant used in 1909 and 1910, and the matte finish was reinstituted this year as it had been originally in 1908. Like the mintage of the 1910, the mintage of 191 proofs for the 1911 Quarter Eagle seems extraordinarily high for an issue where perhaps no more than 60-75 pieces may still be extant. The matte or sandblast surface differs somewhat in texture and color from those of 1908 with more sparkle on the 1911 and also more of a distinctive olive-khaki color.
This piece is one of the finer specimens of matte proof coinage we have recently seen from this denomination. The surfaces smooth and unabraded with only a couple of areas of "shiny spots" (a.k.a. luster breaks), these being visible only at certain angles. Certainly an exceptional example for the advanced collector of proof gold. Lot:7737
