1911 $2 1/2 PR64 PCGS. Proof Indian Quarter Eagle
1911<$2 1/2> PR64 PCGS. Proof Indian Quarter Eagle production amounted to a mere 191 pieces in 1911. This total is commensurate with that of most other issues in this series, but some sources have overstated the rarity of the 1911 by estimating that only 24 pieces were extant. Writing in 2001, Mike Fuljenz and Doug Winter (A Collector's Guide to Indian Head Quarter Eagles) opine that 85-95 specimens remain in collectors' hands, a range that we credit as accurate.
Like the 1908, but unlike the 1909 and 1910, the 1911 proof Quarter Eagle displays a dark matte texture. Rich kaki-gold color envelops both sides, the devices displaying needle sharp delineation in all areas. There are hardly any disruptions to the finish, as one should expect for the grade designation, and the eye appeal is extraordinary in all regards. However, a few shiny spots are reported on each side and a couple of microscopic parallel scratches are seen adjacent to the Indian's neck. Clearly, this is one of the more important 20th century gold offerings in this sale.
