1911<$2 1/2> MS65 PCGS. The 1911 and 1913 quarter eagles had the highest mintages in this series by considerable margins. The new coins were unpopular when they were introduced. Some art critics found the incused design puzzling and perplexing; some citizens feared the coins would harbor germs. Both the '11 and '13 are frequently encountered in lower grades, but few high grade examples were saved. Any Indian quarter eagle in strict Gem condition is a rarity, as well as a prized representative of the numismatic renaissance that occurred in the United States under the auspices of President Theodore Roosevelt, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, and his followers, such as Bela Lyon Pratt, designer of this coin. This piece displays lovely mint frost that is evenly covered by reddish patina on each side. PCGS has graded only one coin finer (1/06).
