1911<$10> PR67 NGC. In Breen's 1977 Proof Encyclopedia he states that there are two varieties of proof 1911 eagles: the fine sandblast surface that is similar to the 1912 issue and the darker color that is more similar to the coins from 1908. While we do not have an example of each at hand for comparison purposes, this coin seems to more closely resemble the darker "mustard colored" 1908 matte proofs.
The official mintage for proof 1911 tens was only 95 pieces. Of that number, undoubtedly quite a few were spent during the Depression or were otherwise rendered unrecognizable as a proof striking today. While others have estimated that only 20 or so pieces are known today, we believe the number to be significantly higher. Based on personal observation as well as population data from the two major grading services it seems more likely that approximately 30-45 pieces are extant in all grades. This example is certainly one of the finest examples known 95 years after striking. NGC has certified six other pieces (with several of these possibly resubmissions) and two are finer, while PCGS has graded one coin PR67.
In addition to the mustard coloration, the surfaces show a coarse granularity with sparkling individual facets from the sandblasting process. This coin is very close to technical perfection. We have diligently searched each side with a 16-power magnifier and the only flaw we see is a very shallow contact mark several millimeters below the second T in TRUST on the reverse. A rare opportunity to acquire this popular issue in a condition that seems to be undergraded even at the PR67 level.
From The Clausen Family Collection.
